B197 driving license

The B197 driving license allows driving both automatic and manual cars, even if the actual practical driving test was passed in an automatic car, by the driver having previously completed at least ten driving lessons in a manual car and having passed a short practical test drive within the driving school.

B78 driving license

The B78 driving license allows the driving of cars with automatic transmission, but imposes a restriction, as manual transmission cars are not permitted; however, this restriction can be lifted by additional training and testing (B197).

Your Path to a Driver’s License

Registration at the driving school

You register with us, provide your contact details, and can immediately start with the theory lessons. Whether you choose Class B197 (with manual transmission skills) or B78 (automatic only), we will decide together.

Gather necessary documents

Before you can submit your application, you need:
✔ eye test certificate
✔ first aid course certificate
✔ biometric passport photo
✔ national ID card or passport

Submit your application at the driver's license office

Take your documents to the town hall, where you will submit your application and officially be allowed to take the theory test.

Theory Lessons & Examination

You will attend 14 double sessions of theory lessons. Afterward, you will take the theory exam at TÜV or DEKRA, while driving lessons continue concurrently.

Driving Lessons & Practical Test

You will gain practical driving experience, including special driving sessions.
• B197: Automatic test with manual driving sessions
• B78: Only automatic driving lessons and test

Receive your driver's license

Once you have successfully passed both the theory and practical exams, you will receive your driver's license and can hit the road with confidence!

1. How long does it take to get a driver's license?

The duration depends on various factors, such as the availability of driving lessons, your own time to study the theory, and your eligibility for the test. On average, it takes 3 to 6 months, but it can take less time or longer. Intensive courses allow you to obtain the license in 2 to 4 weeks.

2. How many driving lessons are necessary?

The number of driving lessons is individual and depends on personal learning progress. Compulsory lessons (prescribed by law):
• 12 special trips (5 cross-country trips, 4 motorway trips, 3 night trips) Additional practice lessons: • An average of 20 to 30 practice lessons, depending on driving skills and confidence.

3. When can I register for the theory test?

Registration is possible as soon as:
• The driver's license application has been approved by the authorities.
• At least 14 theory lessons (for class B) have been completed.
• You feel ready for the test.
• The driving school approves your registration.

The theory test can be taken no earlier than three months before your 17th or 18th birthday.

4. What happens if I fail the exam?

Failed Theory Test:
• You must wait two weeks before you can retake the test.
• You are allowed to take the theory test up to three times.

Failed Practical Test:
• A two-week waiting period applies before you can retake the test.
• Additional driving lessons may be required.
• Extra fees may apply for repeat tests, depending on the driving school.

5. What documents do I need for the registration?

For registering for a driver’s license, you will typically need the following documents:
• Valid ID card or passport
• Eye test certificate (not older than two years)
• First aid course certificate
• Biometric passport photo
• Application form from the driving school for the licensing authority
