With the B197 regulation, you can take your driving test in an automatic vehicle and still drive a manual car – all without a separate test at the authority!
ContactB197 Driver’s License – Maximum Flexibility in Your Training
The B197 license is a flexible extension of the standard Class B license. It allows learner drivers to take their practical driving test in an automatic vehicle while still retaining the right to drive manual cars later on.
This option is especially beneficial for those who want to avoid the challenge of learning to shift gears during the exam but still want the flexibility to drive manual vehicles in the future.
To qualify for manual transmission driving rights, learners must complete at least 10 driving lessons in a manual vehicle at a certified driving school, followed by an internal test drive with their instructor. No additional driving exam at the licensing authority is required, making the process more relaxed and less stressful.
After successful completion, the driver’s license is issued without the automatic restriction (B78), allowing the holder to legally drive both automatic and manual vehicles.
This rule is especially popular among beginner drivers who want to benefit from the simplicity of an automatic car during the test, while keeping their options open for future vehicle choices.
You register with us, provide your contact details, and can immediately start with the theory lessons. Whether you choose Class B197 (with manual transmission skills) or B78 (automatic only), we will decide together.

✔ first aid course certificate
✔ biometric passport photo
✔ national ID card or passport
Take your documents to the town hall, where you will submit your application and officially be allowed to take the theory test.
You will attend 14 double sessions of theory lessons. Afterward, you will take the theory exam at TÜV or DEKRA, while driving lessons continue concurrently.
You will gain practical driving experience, including special driving sessions.
• B197: Automatic test with manual driving sessions
• B78: Only automatic driving lessons and test
Once you have successfully passed both the theory and practical exams, you will receive your driver's license and can hit the road with confidence!
The duration depends on various factors, such as the availability of driving lessons, your own time to study the theory, and your eligibility for the test. On average, it takes 3 to 6 months, but it can take less time or longer. Intensive courses allow you to obtain the license in 2 to 4 weeks.
The number of driving lessons is individual and depends on personal learning progress. Compulsory lessons (prescribed by law):
• 12 special trips (5 cross-country trips, 4 motorway trips, 3 night trips) Additional practice lessons: • An average of 20 to 30 practice lessons, depending on driving skills and confidence.
Registration is possible as soon as:
• The driver's license application has been approved by the authorities.
• At least 14 theory lessons (for class B) have been completed.
• You feel ready for the test.
• The driving school approves your registration.
The theory test can be taken no earlier than three months before your 17th or 18th birthday.
